The Siq Canyon, Gateway to Petra

Description

View through the narrow Al Siq canyon toward the rose-red sandstone facade of Al Khazneh, the Treasury at Petra, Jordan, with a visitor below it.

The sheer size of the structure carved by hand from sandstone can be seen against the camel and the tourist at the end of the canyon.

Al Siq Canyon also served as a water channel, through which fresh water flowed from a spring.

Petra is derived from the Greek word for "rock".

It was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
