Boats on the Sarawak River, Kuching City, Sarawak State, East Malaysia
Description
A small yellow trade boat with a lone helmsman, used to carry goods along the Sarawak River, travels down the brown tidal river past a ferry dock and a yellow-roofed riverside ferry building, with a ferry boat moored complete with ferryman, waiting for customers coming down from the terminal building, backed by lush green tropical trees.
These rivers are a very important means of transport, as some Kampongs (villages) are only reachable during the rainy season by boat.
To electrify these most remote villages, the State's power company took out solar PV units and storage batteries by boat to the remote villages, to create free standing generation and avoid installing power lines through the fast growing jungle, which would have needed almost constant patrols during the rainy season, to remove animals and vegetation from the high voltage power equipment.
