The Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance G HIOW takes off, after delivering a patient needing urgent treatment to Worthing Hospital.

It is taking off from Homefield Park, on which the new hospital was built to replace the previous Victorian Sanatorium in the park.

What is a sanatorium?

In the early 20th century, a new form of treatment for tuberculosis (TB) emerged in Europe. Sanatoriums were a hybrid between a hospital and a resort, built to maximise patients’ exposure to sunlight and clean air. Their bright, open spaces influenced both healthcare and modern architecture. The building of the early sanatorium in the spacious Worthing parks area, that extends to the sea front, fits in with this idea that rest, fresh air, and natural space all help a patient recover, an approach that has perhaps become lost to modern medical treatments.
