John Woodhouse

Railway Hotel

Description

This hotel and public house opposite to Worthing Station was opened in 1896 and was recently refurbished in 2023. It is a classic Victorian design and with 35 rooms was designed to cater for rail travellers as well as local meetings. Being owned originally by a brewery it was also an outlet for local beer and now has a local branch of CAMRA, the champions of real ale, beer and cider.

Originally it was called The Crown Inn and Brewery and later The Central Hotel, to match the station, which was originally called Worthing Central Station. It is now known as The Railway Hotel, a name it had held previously, but then changed with a change of ownership.

Most major towns and cities still have these hotels near to the main railway station, for business meetings, travellers and especially for tourists in the case of the seaside resorts. In the major cities these hotels were often built by the private railway companies.
