John Woodhouse

First Station Building 1845

Description

These cottages formed the first Worthing Station on what became the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR). Opened on 25th November 1845, they were saved from demolition in 1971 and later restored by Frank Sandell & Sons in 1988.

This is now a Grade II listed building.

The first part of the railway ran from Worthing to Shoreham serving Shoreham Airport, where many international flights operated from at the time.

The building is decorated using beach pebbles and stones from the sea shore, that are characterised by their round smooth and polished texture, due to the action of sea water and sand.
