Repair to Storm Damage

Description

In the past Worthing pier has been blown up by the army, fire damaged, and now storm damaged.

Looking from the south end of Worthing Pier towards the North Pavilion to the right can be seen a red coated temporary steel support running under the pier deck to support the Victorian pier, that had been damaged by winter storms in 2024. Due to location of the damage, work could not start straight away as the tide levels were not clearing the work area at low tide, which was required to get the heavy equipment in place. Once the ideal low tide was reached, when the sun, moon and earth are aligned, called "spring low tides" - from the way the tide springs forward when it starts to return - work was able to commence.

Now that the damaged support piles have been offloaded, using the temporary trestle that had to be constructed, the next step will be to replace these damaged support piles.

The temporary repair will cost the council in excess of £430,00 (US$534,000).

Given the impact of global warming and the increased likelihood of more frequent severe storms, these structures and the coastal defences are going to be subjected to many more challenges, even on the English Channel coast line.
