Offering of Incense

Description

At a temple in Kuching City in Sarawak State, incense is offered as an act of devotion signified by the fragrant smoke rising from the burning incense to mark the passage of the person's thoughts and wishes to the deity or spiritual presence being addressed. It is a common practice in Buddhism and is shared with Christian worship, where the rising smoke symbolises prayers ascending to the divine realm.

The offering is in front of an alter at the temple, where the incense will later be placed after the mark of devotion.

Kuching has a significant ethnic Chinese population, many of whom are Buddhists.
