
Sultan Mosque in Kampung Gelam
Description
Seen looking north from Sultan Gate, the Sultan Mosque in Kampong Gelam is an iconic landmark situated at the heart of Singapore's Malay community. Built in 1824 by Sultan Hussein Shah, the first Sultan of Singapore, it has passed through many stages to arrive at its current iconic splendour. It dominates the local shophouses with its golden dome and is in daily use. Its central prayer hall can hold 5,000 people for mass prayer.
It is situated in the Malay Heritage District, off Beach Road.
It is open to tourists for guided tours.
